چکیده

The limiting uncertainty in recent high accuracy measurements of the mass attenuation coefficient is the measurement of the integrated column density. An improvement in the design of the absorption foil holder is described which reduces the integrated column density uncertainty. The new design allows the edges of the foil to be more accurately mapped by the X-ray beam by reducing the largest source of uncertainty in the foil mapping: the uncertainty in the points along the foil edge. The method is shown to reduce the uncertainty in measurements of the mass attenuation coefficient of zinc foils. The reduced uncertainty in the full-foil mapping will allow the X-ray Extended Range Technique (XERT) to be applied to small non-metallic absorption foils more accurately. & 2010 Elsevier B.V. Full-foil x-ray mapping of integrated column density applied to the absolute determination of mass attenuation coefficients

Recent measurements of mass attenuation coefficients have identified the determination of the thickness of the absorbing specimen as the major limitation to the accuracy of the measurement. We present a technique for determining the mass attenuation coefficient with high accuracy. The technique uses the integral of the density along a column extending through the thickness of the absorber, whic...

New consistency tests for high-accuracy measurements of X-ray mass attenuation coefficients by the X-ray extended-range technique.

An extension of the X-ray extended-range technique is described for measuring X-ray mass attenuation coefficients by introducing absolute measurement of a number of foils - the multiple independent foil technique. Illustrating the technique with the results of measurements for gold in the 38-50 keV energy range, it is shown that its use enables selection of the most uniform and well defined of ...

Measurement of the x-ray mass attenuation coefficient of copper using 8.85–20 keV synchrotron radiation

This work presents the x-ray extended range technique for measuring x-ray mass attenuation coefficients. This technique includes the use of multiple foil attenuators at each energy investigated, allowing independent tests of detector linearity and of the harmonic contributions to the monochromated synchrotron beam. Measurements over a wide energy range allow the uncertainty of local foil thickn...

Measurement of the X-ray mass attenuation coefficients of silver in the 5-20 keV range.

The X-ray mass attenuation coefficients of silver were measured in the energy range 5-20 keV with an accuracy of 0.01-0.2% on a relative scale down to 5.3 keV, and of 0.09-1.22% on an absolute scale to 5.0 keV. This analysis confirms that with careful choice of foil thickness and careful correction for systematics, especially including harmonic contents at lower energies, the X-ray attenuation ...
